Real Lives – Michael’s Story

Real Lives – Michael’s Story

Michael’s journey starts when he came to us after experiencing abuse at home. His mum, struggling with alcoholism, repeatedly threatened to kick him out.

At just 18, Michael was confronted with the harsh reality of having nowhere safe to call home. Struggling with anxiety and depression, and facing long waiting lists and a severe shortage of supported housing in Cornwall, he turned to us for help.

Everything changed when he came to YMCA Cornwall

After an initial housing appointment, he was moved into our shared accommodation, where he found stability, safety and care for the first time in years. Within three months, Michael was offered his own flat, a big step toward independence.

Our Supported housing team worked closely with Michael to teach him essential life skills: how to cook, budget, pay bills, and manage day-to-day responsibilities. These practical lessons gave him the confidence to live independently and plan for his future.

A future he never thought he could have

Today, Michael lives in one of our move-on flats and is thriving. He has a safe home, a support network, and a bright future ahead of him.

“Now I’m moving into my own new-build flat with a garden. It’s gorgeous, and I feel so much joy knowing I’m moving on to such a nice place. I’m going to be so proud of it.”

Michael’s story is a reminder of why our work matters.

We don’t just provide accommodation, we provide hope, guidance, and the tools young people need to rebuild their lives.

Your help really does change lives.

My support officer Yasmin has been amazing. She helped me with so much from cooking to help with my bills. And now I feel like a human being, and I’m safe.
